Proper environmental management and routine maintenance are essential to extend service life and suppress sparking for motors fitted with carbon brushes, commutators and slip rings.
Keep Clean
Regularly clear carbon powder and dust both inside and outside the motor housing. Ensure cooling air passages stay unobstructed at all times, as accumulated debris will impair heat dissipation and accelerate component wear.
Control Operating Environment
Minimize motor operation in harsh conditions including heavy dust, oil contamination, high humidity, corrosive fumes and excessive ambient temperature. Install additional protection devices or optimize ventilation solutions if the site environment cannot be improved.
Protect Commutator Oxide film
Avoid excessive cleaning on normally running commutator surfaces. A thin, beneficial oxide film contributes to stable sliding contact. For newly machined or over cleaned surfaces, operate under light load for bedding in, so that the protective oxide film can reform.
Carry out Periodic Maintenance with Morteng recommendations
Replace carbon brushes on a planned schedule rather than waiting for them to hit wear limits. As recommended by Morteng, it is recommended to install brushes from the same batch when roughly one third of service life is left. One motor must use Morteng carbon brushes of identical model and batch number.
New brushes or reworked commutator / slip ring surfaces require bedding in under low load (20 30 % rated load) for several to dozens of hours. Only raise load to full rating after contact surfaces form well matched curved profiles. Morteng highlights that this procedure greatly reduces initial sparking and abnormal wear.
Set up formal inspection routines. Monitor brush residual length, spring pressure, brush mobility, graded spark level, surface condition of commutators or slip rings, operating temperature and running noise during each check. Early detection prevents unexpected downtime.
